Geographic information systems are becoming increasingly important in a widevariety of applications, such as those related to land use monitoring, environmental assessment, resource management, etc. Within the ESPRIT program, geographic information management appears as an application domain in various projects. The Working Group Basic GOODS (Geographic Object-Oriented Database System) has been created in the framework of the Basic Research Actions program to address research topics directly related to geographic information systems.
